Jets head coach Aaron Glenn is filling out his staff and has pegged the man to call the offensive plays next season.
The Jets are in agreement with Tanner Engstrand to be the team's new offensive coordinator.
SNY's Connor Hughes reported earlier Friday that Engstrand was expected to be named the Jets' OC after Nick Caley, the Los Angeles Rams tight ends coach and passing game coordinator and the organization's top choice for the position, let it be known that he did not have an interest in the job.
Engstrand, 42, spent the past five seasons with the Detroit Lions, the last two as the team's passing game coordinator. He originally joined the Lions coaching staff during the 2020 season after working as the offensive coordinator for the XFL's DC Defenders. Prior to the XFL, Engstrand was on staff at the University of Michigan as an offensive analyst.
Glenn is familiar with Engstrand, having both been on the Lions staff the past five years, where the offense excelled. With Engstrand on the offensive staff, the Lions had the second-best passing attack in terms of passing years, fourth in touchdowns and fifth in yards-per-attempt during the 2023-24 season.
This past season, the Lions were second in passing yards per game, sixth in rushing yards per game and second in total yards per game. Detroit was also first in points per game.
Engstrand will take over the position that was held by a couple of names. Nathanial Hackett started the season as the Jets offensive coordinator but he was demoted for Todd Downing. The team's passing game coordinator took over play-calling duties after the firing of head coach Robert Saleh.
With many attributing the Lions' offensive success to Ben Johnson, who took the head coach job with the Bears, Engstand will get his first chance to run a team's offense.
